History of the Sephardim in Amsterdam from the end of the sixteenth century by David Franco Mendes. Despite the date on the title page (1769), Mendes’ account covers the period up to 1772. This copy is in the handwriting of the author. Franco Mendes served for some time as a secretary of the Portuguese community and had access to documents from the archives of the community which he used in writing this work.


Portuguese, and some Spanish and Hebrew / Paper / 28,6 x 22,4 cm. / [189]+[43] pp. (several loose ff. with annotations of the author are bound with the text) / Current writing and vocalised, unvocalised Sephardic cursive writing and some square characters (autogr.) / Last 43 pp. in two different 19th century current hands.
